This basket was tradionally used to strain potatoes (team the potatoes), which would have been done outside the cottage. The Ciseog was then brought inside and used as a platter to serve the potatoes. In the poorest of households which didn't even have a table, this Ciseog was used by placing on an upturned pot, with the family gathering around it to eat.
Nowadays it can be used as a decorative wall-hanging or table centrepiece.
